Hardware platform for supporting the 3D ToF Camera and middleware

A VARIES demonstrator from SoftKinetic comprises 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras. These deliver real-time 3D distance data for far and close interaction. At the same time, there is still little to no standardization in the way products should integrate with the new technology. This means that serving a new customer almost implies the creation of a family of products for that customer, where a significant amount of resources have to be invested in the variability domain. The properties of the technology are defined by many different parameters, such as system design, used algorithms and the application defined constraints. For an efficient integration with customers products the benefits and cost of introducing variability into the multi-diciplinary embedded products should be clarified. Beside the engineering level (e.g. camera design phase) this is also relevant on the level of the product portfolio (e.g., what is the potential value of adding this variant to the portfolio).

Video Surveillance Intelligence

The purpose of this VARIES demonstrator is to apply variability management to a family of product used for video surveillance intelligence developed by HI-Iberia (HIB). At the moment HIB is developing a product that may vary in a wide range of characteristics: from heterogeneous sensors (fixed CCTV cameras to mobile cameras) to different networks (private networks or public mobile networks); from different system architecture (distributed, cloud based or private and centralized architecture) to heterogeneous purposes (from situational awareness for decision support, to anomaly detection, to threat forecasting).

HIB Demo Therefore, this demonstrator would highly benefit from the variability management proposed by VARIES in order to handle the high flexibility of design and development of video surveillance intelligence systems.

VARIES will then allow the following:

  • Reducing the time to market thanks to faster design stage
  • Few iteration steps required for re-design of products according to new specifications
  • Decrease of product prices and better market position with respect to the competence
